Electric vehicles (EVs) have nearly completely replaced traditional vehicles in Norway's new car market. Out of 115,196 passenger cars registered from January to September 2026, 112,825 were electric vehicles, accounting for 97.94% of the new car market. Notably, in September alone, 18,511 electric vehicles were registered, representing 98.81% of the new car market monthly record.

During that September period, Tesla brand led the electric vehicle market with 4,935 vehicle registrations, capturing a 26.3% market share. The Tesla Model Y was particularly dominant, with 4,810 units sold in a single month, accounting for 25.7% of all new car sales in September. In contrast, non-electric vehicles powered by traditional engines registered only around 222 units in September.

However, only 35.3% (1,043,983 vehicles) of all registered vehicles in circulation across Norway are electric vehicles, while diesel cars remain at 29.4% and petrol vehicles at 22.9% on the roads. These figures demonstrate that while Norway's new car market is rapidly transitioning toward electric vehicles, previously purchased petrol and diesel cars continue to operate on the roads.
