New research from Anthropic reveals that current robots are capable of performing approximately 74% of manual labor tasks required in US workplaces. The study, which analyzed around 900 job categories and 19,000 work tasks, found that human-performed manual work currently accounts for up to 34% of total US workplace hours.
However, technological capability alone has not directly paved the way for robots to replace humans in actual workplaces, as cost challenges remain the primary obstacle. Currently, robots are economically viable for only 0.3% of total work tasks. For example, in packaging operations, robots can perform up to 97% of tasks, but the cost of installing and maintaining robotic systems remains a major expense.
Over the past decade, robot performance has improved by approximately 2% annually, while prices have decreased by around 3%. If this rate of progress continues, robots are estimated to need at least 40 more years to cost-effectively compete with and replace humans in approximately 10% of work tasks.
