The US Naval Innovation Consortium has unveiled an offshore AI data center project capable of producing electricity and fresh water. The vessel, named Kraaken and rated at 100 megawatts, is being constructed by Optimal Transit Company.
The project will deliver up to 40 megawatts of electricity to the coast, capable of powering approximately 32,000 homes. Additionally, it will produce 30 million liters of fresh water daily, sufficient for 150,000 people, while the remaining 60 megawatts will be used for AI computing operations. The vessel will utilize Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) technology and waste heat from computers to generate electricity and fresh water.
The design allows the vessel to be relocated during severe weather seasons. According to Optimal Transit's estimates, the construction timeline is approximately 3 years (excluding computer hardware costs), with a projected cost of around $587 million. However, Kraaken currently remains at the proposal stage and is not yet operational in practice.
