Japan's Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which introduced an AI-powered dating application in 2024 to boost the country's declining birth rate, has seen 265 couples get married through the app.
According to Japanese government data, as of June 30, the Tokyo Enmusubi application has 16,000 registered members, and 760 couples have been able to build deeper relationships.
The application was launched after a survey showed that approximately 70 percent of people interested in marriage were not actively seeking a spouse.
To overcome such reluctance and ensure that only those genuinely wanting to marry participate, applicants must provide proof of being legally single or divorced, as well as successfully complete online interviews.
Since the application presents three levels of compatibility between individuals, it can encourage those hesitant about meeting.
According to 2025 government data, Japan's birth rate has declined for ten consecutive years, reaching a record low of 671,236 births.
The number of deaths, however, at 1.6 million, is more than double the birth rate. As a result, the government is making efforts with technological assistance to encourage young people to marry and increase the birth rate.
