Renowned company Anthropic has outlined three interesting scenarios regarding how much America's economy could be transformed by artificial intelligence (AI) technology by 2030. In what could be described as the worst-case scenario, AI would completely replace most human jobs. If this occurs, the US economy could grow at an accelerated rate of up to 15% annually, and the nation's GDP could reach $44.4 trillion. However, unemployment rates could rise to historically unprecedented levels, and the resulting income would flow primarily to investors and large corporations rather than reaching workers' hands.
The second scenario is not as severe. AI would assist with only about half of knowledge-based work, and GDP could reach $36.3 trillion. However, workers' wages would remain stagnant without improvement. In the third, more moderate scenario, AI's impact would be comparable to current internet usage. GDP would reach $34.1 trillion, and there would be no significant changes in people's job opportunities, according to Anthropic.
In reality, these projections are not predetermined forecasts. They largely depend on how rapidly and broadly companies adopt AI technology. When Anthropic surveyed over 10,000 Americans on this matter, most believed the middle scenario was most likely, while about 10% expressed concern that the worst-case scenario could occur.
