In Australia, during midday hours when solar energy production is extremely high, some households are now able to use up to three hours of free electricity daily.
Under the new Solar Sharer program that started on July 1, 2026, households in New South Wales, South Australia, and southeastern Queensland can now choose a system where they won't be charged for electricity during the best sunlight hours.
Australia is one of the world's highest countries in rooftop solar panel installations, and on hot sunny days, the electricity grid produces more than needed, causing spot electricity prices to drop to zero or even below zero.
This program encourages the efficient use of excess clean energy by promoting the full use of washing machines, dishwashers, air conditioners, and electric vehicles during the free electricity hours.
Only households with smart meters and registered in the designated program are eligible for this benefit, with a free usage limit of up to 24 kilowatt-hours (kWh) within three hours. This amount can cover most of a typical household's daily electricity needs.
However, for electricity used outside the free hours, standard rates must be paid. In any case, this program is a way of smartly distributing the vast solar energy that is abundant during Australia's daytime hours.
