Bill Gates, one of the world's wealthiest individuals, has issued a stark warning that without systematic oversight of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, it will become exclusive to the rich and further exacerbate global inequality. To prevent this scenario, his Gates Foundation plans to commit up to $1 billion to make AI technology universally accessible to everyone.
Of the $1 billion in planned funding, 40 percent will be allocated to the education sector, while another 40 percent will be directed toward the healthcare sector. The remaining 20 percent will be split equally between supporting farmers in the agricultural sector and building AI infrastructure accessible to all. Additionally, the Foundation advocates for making AI available in multiple native languages and ensuring local communities have autonomous control over their own data.
While Gates is providing financial support, he is not dismissing the risks lurking behind AI technology. He acknowledges that AI could eliminate a substantial number of entry-level and mid-level jobs, and highlights dangers including potential cyber attacks, misinformation, and fraudulent misuse. Most critically, he warns of the need to remain vigilant about scenarios where AI systems could escape human control.
