While concerns and criticism about artificial intelligence (AI) technology are growing worldwide, the rate of AI usage continues to rise steadily.
According to estimates from market research firm Sensor Tower, OpenAI's ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users (MAUs) in May. This made it the fastest app to reach this milestone, approximately three and a half years after its launch in November 2022, surpassing even Google Maps.
Although ChatGPT maintains a significant lead in user numbers, rival AI apps such as Google's Gemini, ByteDance's Doubao, and Anthropic's Claude are following at an accelerated pace.
In particular, when OpenAI reached an agreement in February to collaborate with the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon), it raised security concerns among the public and led to a significant number of users uninstalling the ChatGPT app.
At that time, Anthropic's Claude app, which refused to engage in military-related work, became the first to reach the top position on the American App Store.
Despite concerns from degree-holding youth worried about job losses, warnings from religious leaders, and ethical concerns from workers, AI technology has already become an increasingly important role in people's daily lives.
According to surveys, 74 percent of workers in the workplace are now regularly using AI, and according to United Nations estimates, the growing AI market could reach over $4.8 trillion by 2033.
Currently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and rival company Anthropic are each preparing to file for initial public offerings (IPOs) in the American market.
