According to Sensor Tower's 2026 AI report, ChatGPT remains the most-used AI assistant app in the market, but its monthly active user market share declined to 46.4% by May. This is due to improved performance and increased user adoption of competing apps like Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude. Currently, Google Gemini has captured 27.7% market share, while Claude holds 10.3%.

However, ChatGPT still significantly outpaces competitors in terms of total user numbers. According to Reuters, it became the fastest app to reach 1 billion monthly active users globally. On the other hand, users are becoming more open to switching to other AI apps based on trust in the brand and its functionality. For example, following OpenAI's agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense in February, there was a notable increase in users deleting ChatGPT from their phones.

As competition intensifies, AI companies are increasingly promoting subscription models, advertising systems, and new services that can generate revenue from users. Currently, the Claude app has up to 13% paying subscribers, the highest rate. OpenAI is also testing ads in ChatGPT, and with approximately 17% of daily active users seeing ads by May, there is potential that AI apps in the future will not only provide assistance but also become platforms for product sales and advertising.
