Chinese researchers have invented a laser-based wireless power transmission system that allows drones to land on the ground and fly for extended periods in the sky without needing to recharge their batteries.
The system uses a laser array to transmit energy to a receiving device, which converts the light beam into electrical power.
Additionally, an automatic tracking system has been developed to ensure the laser array accurately hits the moving receiving device.
During testing, the system was able to maintain stable communication over a distance of 10 meters (over 30 feet) and successfully transmit power.
To prevent equipment overheating, the prototype system uses the airflow from the rotating drone propeller to cool the laser power receiver.
Researchers say this technology could greatly benefit drones used for long-duration operations in emergency response, communications, and security applications, where frequent battery recharging is impractical.
However, since the technology is still in the experimental stage, further research is needed before it can be deployed outside of controlled testing environments.
