China's Surgical Robot Outperforms Human Surgeons

Chinese researchers have announced the development of a surgical robot capable of performing complex brain imaging procedures about 30% faster than before. This has become the world's first officially recognized autonomous cerebrovascular surgical system, marking a significant milestone in the medical world.
At the renowned Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), a junior surgeon used the robot in a test surgery and was astonished to find it reduced the procedure time by about 9 minutes compared to conventional human-performed surgery. The YDHB-NS01 system is highly suitable for diagnostics and shows promising safety characteristics, according to lead researcher Dr. Zhao Yuanli, who published findings in the Chinese Neurosurgical Journal on January 30.
Cerebrovascular imaging is an indispensable step in treating brain diseases, but it is a particularly difficult and demanding procedure for both patients and surgeons. In the traditional method, surgeons manually and carefully insert a thin wire through the patient's thigh into the cerebral blood vessels while taking X-rays — a process prone to unavoidable hand tremors and requiring surgeons to wear heavy lead aprons and collars to protect against radiation, leading to significant physical fatigue. Long-term radiation exposure also poses a major health threat to surgeons, making the arrival of such a surgical robot a potential turning point for the medical field.
