Google has finally rolled out the long-awaited ability to change the username portion of your @gmail.com email address. The feature is currently available in the United States, with a wider rollout to other countries expected in the coming months.
To change your Gmail address, go to your Google Account settings, tap Personal info, then Email, and finally select Google Account email. You'll see a blue Change Google Account email button — tap it and choose your new username.
Your old address will remain linked to your account as an alternate address, so any emails sent to it will still reach your inbox. The key thing to keep in mind is that you can only make this change once every 12 months, so choose your new name carefully.
Because this is a gradual rollout, it may take a few days before the option appears in your account settings — even if you're already in the US. If you don't see it yet, check back in a couple of days.
