Family members, employers, or authority figures' phone numbers are being impersonated and deepfakes with artificially generated voices that are nearly indistinguishable from real ones are being created. To protect against these dangers, Google has introduced a new system.

In the current era, scammers are using internet software to not only impersonate the phone numbers of people they know, but are also deceiving people with AI-generated voice clones that are virtually impossible to distinguish from authentic voices.

To solve this problem, Google has officially introduced "Fake Call Detection" (a system to detect and expose fake phone calls) within the Phone by Google App.

The way this system works is quite interesting. If both the caller and the recipient are using the Phone by Google App, when a call is made, the apps will silently connect and verify with each other in the background automatically.

For this verification, an End-to-end Encrypted RCS system is used, so you can be completely confident about privacy and security.

If a scammer calls with a fake phone number and voice clone, there will be no mutual verification signal, so a warning message will appear on the phone screen, allowing you to be protected from the risk of being deceived in real time. This system will be automatically enabled in the app, and you can also turn it off in Settings if desired.

The Fake Call Detection system will begin rolling out globally this month for phones running Android 12 and above.

As usual, Google's own Pixel phones will be the first to get access to this system. Other Android phone users can also download the Phone by Google App from the Play Store and use it in place of their phone's default phone app.
