The Japanese government is planning to distribute up to 10 million AI-powered robots for use across 18 sectors by 2040, and to develop its own AI model. The proprietary AI model will be developed by the Noetra alliance, which includes SoftBank and Sony, and the government will provide support of up to 1 trillion yen (US$6.1 billion) over the next 5 years depending on results.

The project focuses primarily on Physical AI systems that can be used in the real world, such as autonomous vehicles and factory robots, rather than just enabling software on screens to interact with each other. The initiative is expected to attract up to 44 companies from the automotive, electronics, finance, and logistics sectors.

Japan is making this effort to develop its own AI model to reduce its excessive dependence on technologies from the United States and China. Additionally, the robots are expected to help address the labor shortage problem faced by Japan's workplaces as its population ages and the workforce declines.
