The Age of High-Tech Toilets That Can Check Your Health Is Here
Japanese toilet makers are pioneering health-monitoring smart toilets — Toto's new Neorest models use LED sensors to analyze stool shape, volume, and color, while Panasonic offers a device for elderly care facilities.
Japanese toilet manufacturers — famous for their innovative designs — have introduced new technology for health-conscious users that can analyze stool. Toto Ltd launched two new Neorest series models last August, featuring LED sensors that measure the shape, volume, and color of stool.
These are the first home-use systems of their kind in Japan, classifying stool consistency and firmness across 7 levels, and volume and color in 3 levels each. Through a smartphone app, users can monitor their bowel health and receive dietary recommendations such as eating more vegetables.
Panasonic Housing Solutions has also developed a device called Toirepo for elderly care facilities. It uses sensors to record the time, frequency, and volume of toilet use — reducing the awkwardness and difficulty of manual monitoring for staff and residents.
Japan's toilet industry has long adapted to evolving social needs, shifting from a focus on hygiene and comfort to now prioritizing health. These products have emerged from genuine curiosity, and analysts expect this space to continue growing.
