Elon Musk's space technology company SpaceX has agreed to acquire Cursor, an AI code-writing software startup founded by 25-year-old Michael Truell, for $60 billion. Through this acquisition, Michael Truell, who is the co-founder and CEO of the company, has become one of the youngest self-made billionaires in the AI era.
According to this agreement, Anysphere, the parent company of Cursor, will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of SpaceX. By integrating Cursor into its ecosystem, SpaceX will be able to utilize one of the world's fastest-growing AI software platforms, and combined with xAI's computing systems, it will be able to compete against rivals like OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude Code.
Cursor was founded in 2022 by MIT students working together, and was initially intended to be an AI assistance tool for mechanical engineers, but later pivoted to focus on software development. The company has grown rapidly and is being widely used by major companies on the Fortune 500 list such as Nvidia, Adobe, Salesforce, and Samsung.
