In the foldable smartphone market, Samsung Display is facing intense pressure from Chinese screen manufacturers. Due to this, Samsung is preparing to become the leader in the rollable screen market and is in discussions about supplying phone displays to Samsung Electronics, according to Korean news sources.
The rollable smartphone is planned to be introduced in the first half of 2028, and a Samsung Electronics executive has confirmed this.
The upcoming smartphone is expected to be named either Galaxy Z Slide or Galaxy Z Roll. According to market research estimates, the phone will feature a 10-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 440.6 ppi.
Additionally, a follow-up model of this phone is set to be introduced in 2030. In reality, rollable screens are more complex in structure than foldable screens, making them more difficult to manufacture.
However, Samsung Display has been developing this technology for quite some time, and since 2023 has been showcasing prototype designs. The company also supplies screens for Lenovo's rollable laptops.
In the foldable phone market, Chinese company BOE has been able to compete with Samsung, and dominated the market in the first quarter of this year. However, Samsung is decisively superior in rollable screen technology.
Because of this, Samsung has the opportunity to maintain its dominance throughout this entire market in the coming years.
