New York City's public schools will prohibit students up to 8th grade from using artificial intelligence. The decision comes from concerns by parents, teachers, and school officials about the impact on children's mental health, cognitive development, and the environment. AI chatbots providing mental health support will also be banned.

In the American education system, high school students starting from 9th grade will be allowed limited use of AI technology only for specific educational purposes related to learning about AI itself. However, teachers and school staff will continue to have permission to use AI for preparing lessons and writing documents.

The new regulations come after the previous AI usage framework released in March was criticized for being too lenient. To establish a comprehensive AI policy for New York schools, the city will establish a working group consisting of teachers, educators, and experts. The group is expected to publish a report in April.
