A school in New York State has suspended its plan to use an AI robot named "Sally" in classrooms.
The decision came after concerns were raised by residents, teachers, and state education officials about the robot manufacturer's connection to a company that produces adult-oriented dolls.
School officials had intended the nearly $60,000 robot to assist high school students in learning robotics and technology subjects.
The school principal stated that the robot is not meant to replace human teachers and that student information will be kept secure.
Realbotix, the company that manufactures the robot, clarified that their educational robots are separate from products made for adults.
However, opposition continues. State education commissioners and teacher union leaders have pointed out that students need to be familiar with compassionate humans rather than robots.
Currently, the school is working with state education officials on data security agreements and continuing discussions with residents, so the pilot program has been temporarily suspended.
