Have you ever imagined future AI technology running on wave-powered data centers at sea instead of traditional land-based data centers? An Oregon-based startup company called Panthalassa is turning this creative idea into reality. Their Ocean-3 platform will harness the rise and fall of ocean waves to push water through internal turbines, generating the electrical power needed for AI computing operations.
The most distinctive feature of this system is that it uses seawater directly to cool computers. This eliminates the need for large amounts of freshwater and complex cooling systems like those required on land. Additionally, Ocean-3 is designed to operate autonomously without any cables or connections to land or the seafloor, and can communicate data bidirectionally through satellite communications.
For this innovative technology, Panthalassa has successfully tested the Ocean-2 prototype system and is now preparing for the larger Ocean-3 system. On May 4, 2026, they announced securing $140 million in Series B funding led by renowned investor Peter Thiel. With this funding, they plan to complete a pilot facility near Portland and are likely to soon witness AI data centers floating in the ocean in the near future.
