Recent research papers from two studies show that excessive reliance on AI can reduce critical thinking abilities.
According to a study by Microsoft Research that examined 319 experts from various departments and 936 AI-related tasks, those who trust AI more tend to exert less effort on critical thinking because they are more likely to review and refine AI's answers rather than solve problems themselves.
Another study involving 666 participants also found that frequent use of AI is associated with reduced critical thinking abilities.
This is due to the habit of cognitive offloading—excessively relying on technology for brain functions that require independent scrutiny—and this effect is more pronounced in young people aged 17 to 25.
However, these research studies do not directly prove that AI causes reduced thinking ability but rather show a correlation, so further studies on long-term effects will be necessary.
Experts point out that if AI is used beneficially, it remains a valuable tool for learning and productivity.
Therefore, it is recommended that AI be used to support rather than replace people's thinking, and that people approach information provided by AI with skepticism, verify it, and engage in critical thinking.
