Pope Francis XIV, in response to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, has released his first comprehensive encyclical titled "Magnifica Humanitas" (Splendid Humanity) and issued a warning.
The encyclical states that AI should only serve to assist humanity and must never replace humans or dominate the human species. Furthermore, it strongly urges the establishment of stricter ethical standards as AI becomes more powerful, the protection of human employment, and respect for human dignity.
Pope Francis has announced a strategic partnership with Anthropic, the renowned company that developed Claude AI. Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, personally attended and spoke at the event held at the Vatican. The primary objective of this collaboration is to guide the advancement of AI technology not merely from a technological perspective, but on the foundations of ethics and humanism.
Pope Francis stated that AI technology must be an instrument to assist humanity, and emphasized that he cannot tolerate the inequalities that emerge in society due to this technology, the loss of employment, and the emergence of new forms of domination and control.
