Over 60 researchers have released the 2026 Planetary Health Check report, led by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, warning that 7 of the 9 critical planetary boundaries established to maintain Earth's long-term stability and environmental security have reached dangerous levels of transgression. The report reveals that all 7 of these boundaries—including climate change, biodiversity loss, forest and land-use change, freshwater depletion, chemical pollution, and ocean acidification—have reached historically concerning levels of stress. Ocean acidification, in particular, only began exceeding critical thresholds in 2025.
While the breach of most of these safety boundaries indicates extreme pressure on Earth's systems, scientists clarify that the planet has not yet reached an immediately uninhabitable state. However, because these systems are interconnected, pressures on the planetary system are compounding, creating a high risk of irreversible long-term damage and cascading consequences.
Currently, only 2 of the 9 boundaries remain within safe limits: ozone layer protection and atmospheric aerosol loading. Scientists emphasize this statement is not a doomsday prediction, but rather a timely warning about the mounting stress on the natural environment that supports human survival and well-being.
