Elon Musk's SpaceX company has initiated a project to expand future AI technology data centers beyond Earth's surface into outer space. The project, named Starmind, plans to deploy powerful AI computers on satellites and launch them into space, with the first deployment expected to be seen in 2027. The satellites will use large solar panels for electricity, and the resulting data will be transmitted back to Earth through SpaceX's Starlink satellite network.
The AI1 satellites, which will be equipped with solar panels approximately 65 feet tall and spanning up to 229 feet wide, could become a revolutionary shift for future technology. Unlike Earth-based data centers that rely on electrical power lines, space-based systems can naturally utilize uninterrupted solar energy from the sun without dependence on grid infrastructure. Additionally, the problem of multiple cooling systems required on Earth can be easily solved by directly dissipating heat into space's cold environment.
To produce these space-based AI satellites in large quantities, SpaceX has already begun constructing the Gigasat factory in Bastrop, Texas. Long-term plans aim to deploy up to one million AI satellites in space. Currently, the project remains in the preparation stage awaiting technical testing and regulatory approval from authorities, so it is not yet an operational data center but rather a future-oriented initiative.
