Medical technology company Stryker's SportSuite Vision app for Apple Vision Pro was successfully used in a spinal surgery procedure at Duke Health. The software received FDA De Novo clearance last July and this marks the first time it has been used in an actual surgical procedure.
With this mixed reality technology, surgeons can easily view digital images while simultaneously observing the patient and the real world. Surgeon Dr. Chad Mather III stated that by using spatial computing technology, he can arrange necessary information and radiographic images as needed during the surgical procedure, creating a more comfortable operating room environment.
Due to the high cost of the headset and difficulty in software development, widespread adoption among general users remains distant. Although recent news reports that some members of Apple's Vision Pro team have been laid off, the successful use of this technology in such complex medical surgeries demonstrates promising future potential for this innovation.
