The UK government is reportedly set to introduce a curfew banning teenagers aged 16 and 17 from using social media from midnight to 6 a.m. Last month, Prime Minister Keir Starmer banned social media use for under-16s.
The aim is to prevent endless scrolling that captivates young people's attention. Technology Secretary Lizz Kendall said the scheme would help young people get sufficient sleep, focus on schoolwork, and spend quality time with family and friends. Additionally, checks will be required for regular breaks when under-18s use AI chatbots.
While some child welfare organizations have welcomed this change, critics point out that the effectiveness is unclear and enforcement methods are not well defined. Currently, other countries including Australia, Canada, the UAE, and Indonesia are also implementing their own social media restrictions and bans for young people.
