A Tesla vehicle struck a home near Katie in Texarkana, Texas on Saturday night, resulting in the death of a 76-year-old woman named Martha Abigail who was inside the house, according to local police.
The Tesla Model 3 car sped out of control and crashed into the home. The injured woman was airlifted to a hospital but died from her injuries.
According to police reports, the driver was using Tesla's autopilot system at the time of the accident. Harris County Sheriff's Office stated that the driver showed no signs of alcohol intoxication.
Tesla's autopilot system has been involved in several serious accidents resulting in fatalities in the past.
In connection with this incident, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began investigations on Monday.
An NHTSA spokesperson has not disclosed detailed information, but the agency's website states that accidents involving unusual circumstances like this will be investigated by a special investigation team.
