Land-based data centers are consuming billions of units of electricity and fresh water, posing a significant threat to the natural environment. In response, American Startup Panthalassa is tackling this problem by developing offshore AI data centers powered by ocean waves.

These platforms will generate electricity directly from the up and down movements of ocean waves, while utilizing surrounding seawater naturally to cool the servers.

Large-scale computational tasks of AI will be processed directly on these platforms in the ocean, with results transmitted back to the world via satellite.

This innovative technology is no longer just theoretical. The company has successfully built and tested small prototype models, and has secured funding of up to $140 million by 2026 to begin large-scale production and deployment in the ocean.

While large-scale commercial operations have not yet commenced, the company is steadily advancing the world's first pioneering projects.

Each data center floating in the blue ocean will feature a steel design approximately 85 meters in length, constructed in a buoy-like shape that includes a long vertical pipe extending deep underwater.

More impressively, these platforms can move autonomously, and are designed with minimal moving parts that are prone to wear in order to ensure durability and reliability in the ocean environment over the long term.

This innovation will harness energy from waves that flow continuously day and night, as well as natural seawater, which will not only address AI's electricity demands but also significantly reduce dependence on land-based power grids and valuable freshwater resources.
