A 23-year-old Vietnamese student named Vu Ha Chau, who self-taught programming, has been accepted simultaneously to PhD programs in Computer Science at all three prestigious Ivy League universities in the United States: Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia University.
These full scholarships, which cover tuition fees, insurance, and living expenses for 5 years without requiring a single cent from her, are valued between $450,000 to $650,000 USD at each university. This is an excellent result achieved through her relentless efforts during her four years of university studies.
Chau, who attended an English-specialized class during high school, self-taught herself computer coding techniques online.
Excited and impressed upon seeing people using the software she first created, in 2022 she enrolled at Pomona College in the United States with a scholarship worth $260,000 USD.
Upon entering university, she became interested not only in software engineering but also research work, and dedicated herself to studying in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).
Some of her research papers have won top best paper awards at world-class technology conferences, and she has also been honored as an outstanding student researcher in North America.
She managed work pressure from school, research, and internships at global tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon by maintaining a strict schedule, balancing rest time and hobbies.
Currently, she is preparing to decline job offers from major companies and choose one of the three dream universities for her doctoral studies to pursue a career path as a scientist.
Regardless of which university she attends, her future goal is to continue developing technological systems to ensure safe and secure interactions between humans and AI systems.
