WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new Scam Alert feature to Android beta users, aimed at helping people identify and avoid online fraud attempts directly within the app. According to GSMArena, the feature is now live in the latest beta build and works by flagging suspicious messages in real time.

The system detects patterns commonly associated with scams — such as unknown senders requesting sensitive information like bank details or one-time passwords (OTPs) — and automatically displays a warning to the user. Importantly, WhatsApp has confirmed that this detection process does not compromise end-to-end encryption, as the AI-based system analyzes message patterns without WhatsApp itself reading private chat content.

For now, the Scam Alert feature is exclusive to Android beta testers, with a broader rollout to the stable version expected in the coming weeks as WhatsApp gathers feedback and refines the detection accuracy. The feature is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing effort to strengthen user safety amid rising instances of messaging-based scams worldwide.

Given WhatsApp’s dominant position as the most widely used messaging platform in Myanmar, the introduction of built-in scam detection could offer meaningful protection for everyday users who rely on the app for both personal and business communication. As online fraud tactics continue to evolve, features like this represent a practical step toward safer digital messaging.
