Apple introduced Emergency SOS via satellite with the iPhone 14 in 2022, saving lives in emergencies. However, the system has limitations — users must aim their phone at a moving satellite, and buildings, trees, and terrain can obstruct the connection. The phone's small antenna can only transmit a small amount of data before the satellite moves out of range. A patent filed by Apple in 2024 reveals the company is working to solve this problem. The patent describes using a phone case as an antenna to provide full satellite internet connectivity. The case would contain a phased array antenna system capable of connecting to a constellation of satellites simultaneously rather than targeting a single satellite. This means the connection would remain uninterrupted even as satellites move across the sky. If implemented, this would transform Apple devices from emergency-only satellite tools into full satellite internet devices, capable of providing broadband-like connectivity anywhere on Earth — even in the most remote locations without cellular coverage.
