Taiwan Issues Arrest Warrant for OnePlus CEO Over Illegal Recruitment of Taiwanese Engineers
The Shilin District Prosecutor's Office in Taiwan issued an arrest warrant for OnePlus CEO Pete Lau for allegedly recruiting Taiwanese tech workers without government authorization.
The Shilin District Prosecutor's Office in Taiwan issued an arrest warrant for Pete Lau, CEO of Chinese smartphone company OnePlus, for allegedly violating the Cross-Strait Act by recruiting Taiwanese technology professionals without government authorization. Investigators found that he had hired over 70 Taiwanese engineers outside the established regulatory framework.
According to prosecutors, Pete Lau first established a subsidiary in Hong Kong to circumvent the law, then opened a branch office in Taiwan and recruited engineers with high salaries. The recruited employees were primarily engaged in software research and development (R&D) for OnePlus smartphones. Two Taiwanese nationals who cooperated with Pete Lau in the scheme have also been charged.
Taiwan's government currently views Chinese companies recruiting the country's technology talent as a national security threat, and is enforcing strict measures. Under the law, Chinese companies wishing to open offices in Taiwan must first obtain explicit government approval. OnePlus, for its part, has stated that despite the reports, its operations are continuing normally.
